Tonight was CCO’s Progressive Supper.
The word for the night was Hospitality. It was so awesome to see these families opening their homes to us (I mean we’re not living on the street going hungry but it was still such a gesture of hospitality and love.
Our first stop was at the CCO Headquarters for appetizers. There were tuna and cucumber horsdeuves(sp?), mushrooms stuffed with cheese and garlic and sushi as well as bread and various dips. I worried I might have filled up too much on these but I had nothing to worry about with a nursing appetite.
I had brought my car with 3 empty seats but I only ended up driving one person. It was nicer with just the two of us though, because every time we were in the car together we got to talk one on one and get to know each other better, it was fun.
Our next stop was a little red house. Inside we found a welcoming family and a table with caesar salad, garlic bread and punch, which was all delicious. The little boy in the house thought the baby’s carseat was the coolest toy for at least 5 minutes. This seemed remarkable to me, as the boy looked to be around 7! The woman who hosted was predictably taken with the baby, and carried him around until we had to leave, holding my baby in 1 arm and mixing punch with the other.
We were the last to leave again, with a baby in tow, so as we were leaving we ended up stopping to chat at the door. That’s when I found out who the next house was. I just knew from the last name who that must be – my highschol teacher who I’ve been running a lot since I started hanging with the CCO people.
It was indeed my teacher’s place. She was pleasantly surprised to see me and also ended up carrying the baby around for a while, while I got my supper (I knew she would want to… just like with the other mom, it was clear they wanted to hold the baby). As I was eating I saw her husband with the baby. Baby seemed to like him, he seems to like all the men who hold him, I think they remind him of his daddy. I ended up having to change a poopy diaper in her living room but she was cool about it.
It was so neat to meet her family, after knowing her so long. What a great loving example of a catholic family. Both hosts were-and they were equally thrilled to meet us-Catholic youth etc (1st house), and having the house fuller than it’s ever been (2nd)-a full home really does warm your heart.
A little shout-out of thanks to God for this one. The person I was driving was scheduled to give a testimony at my teacher’s place, thus guaranteeing I would be one of her guests.
I did end up mentioning that I would be willing to give a testimony some day. I got the appropriate form recently but haven’t had time to put anything together yet, so maybe next term?
From there we went back to the university for a 4th course, ice cream sundaes. As we were all hanging out one of the CCO staff brought up a funny video on his facebook. After the video ended he received a chat message while the screen was still projecting from his laptop. Turns out our little CCO playmate is going to be a big sister. He typed back to his friend that the entire room was now cheering.
It was also announced that there would be a 5th ‘bring your own’ course at the boys house. So many of us went over there and crammed into the living room to watch the Olympic Opening Ceremonies.

It’s “hors d’oeuvres.” After all those years of French, I would have expected you to get it.
Lovely encounter with your former teacher!
